Springfield Armory XD-S (9mm and .45) - SAFETY RECALL

While S&W recently announced a "Safety Alert" which affected some of their more recent M&P Shield pistols, Springfield Armory has now released a much more dangerous "Safety Recall" on many of their 9mm AND .45acp XD-S pistols.

If you own an XD-S, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY!

According to Springfield, "some 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm and .45ACP caliber pistols could experience an unintended discharge during the loading process when the slide is released, or could experience a double-fire when the trigger is pulled once."

I have inspected both my XDS 9mm & 45acp and I can see how this could be an issue if the firing pin gets too gunked up with un-burnt powder or residue. Causing the firing pin to stick out and not retract easily and freely.

I have fired over 500 rounds through both pistols without any incidents. Practice gun safety and always keep your guns clean and it shouldn't be a problem.

But if anyone is uncomfortable, then by all means, send it back to Springfield.

...No, I send it back because the manufacturer issued a safety recall. This is not based on the owner's "Comfort Level) It's based on documented malfunctions, liability, (your's included now that you're aware) and Springfield acknowledging that they released a product that was unsafe under certain conditions. It may be a manufacturer's part batch number for one component. It could be a certain round of ammo, or like you wrote it could be the way it's owner cleans their firearm. And it could be a combination.

They'll make it right or offer an equitable solution.
What I don't do is disregard recalls and hope an incident doesn't happen down the road where someone is hurt or I need legal recourse.

Respectfully,

Springfield is screwing this recall up royally. They said it would be a 30-day turn around. I called them more than a month after I sent it in and they told me they don't even have a fix for it yet. The lady talked to said they have no idea when I am going to get my firearm back.

In the mean time, they have my money and my firearm is gathering dust in their warehouse. Thanks for the pathetic customer service, Springfield!

Red - Wow, Yeah, I've heard similar stories from other people who sent back their XDS due to the recall. Like you said, Springfield doesn't have a fix for it yet. Hopefully they will get the issue safely resolved quickly for everyone. Sure doesn't give you much confidence in the firearm (or the company), though, in my opinion (the way this has gone so far)...

I sent my mine back right after the recall notice. Springfield actually was quite good about keeping me up to date on what was going on. It took about 6 weeks but I received it back and they threw in an extra mag and a couple of mag extenders and a small hard case (albeit somewhat beat up). I think overall they did a fantastic job. Taking it out to shoot tonight for the first time.

Turn around for my recall was 12 days from the time I took it to FedEx shipping until it arrived on my door step with an extra 7 rd magazine.
